Was Damon's health part of the Yankees’ decision not to sign him? Where do you think he will end up? Are the Rays really serious about signing him?
Health was not at all a part of the decision, or at least no one ever said it was. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman was quoted as saying "Damon's abilities didn't fit out budget," suggesting that it was solely a matter of cash.
The top potential suitors have been the Braves, Tigers and Reds. The Braves have said they only have $1-2 million left -- a figure that Damon won't sign for -- the Tigers GM said they have no interest in Damon, and the Reds are likely short on cash after signing Aroldis Chapman. As for the Rays, they likely don't have enough cash left either.
The market for Damon is a thin, perhaps non-existent one. No team seems serious about pursuing him, especially for a deal worth his demands. For that reason, we can’t completely rule out Damon in New York, although it's extremely unlikely he’ll return there.
Why in the world would the Yankees want Randy Winn?
Not quite sure the Yankees necessarily wanted Winn, but he was the best they could afford. Damon was obviously the top option, but, like many other teams, he was beyond their budget. Winn isn't a bad move, considering he hit over .300 in two of his past three seasons. The Yankees already have a full outfield, and Winn will serve as a fourth option. He's definitely qualified to fill that spot, especially for $2 million.
Why aren't the Mets being more aggressive with the free agent market? Do you think they are serious about signing John Smoltz?
Although the Mets have been somewhat quiet at times this offseason, don't forget the signing of Jason Bay - a huge upgrade in left field. Perhaps the main reason they aren't making much noise is because Omar Minaya likely doesn't have complete control over the team. If he did, you can bet the Mets would be much more aggressive. The Mets appear to be tuned in to the Smoltz market. He is a pitcher that will likely come very cheaply for a one-year deal, so it's a win-win situation for the Mets. Although he said he wants to go back to St. Louis, it's very possible the Mets could get a hold of him.
