All Eyes On Prospects As Spring Looms

Tuesday marks the most exciting day of the year for baseball fans; the beginning of Spring Training. All teams will start out on the same level, and the hope of a championship will slither through every fan.

A lot of teams will see top prospects break onto the scene this Spring, and we are undoubtedly going to get a glimpse of the future. Here are the top three prospects that can make a difference this year.

altJason Heyward, Atlanta Braves

Info: Heyward was drafted in the first round of the 2007 draft. Baseball America ranked him as the #5 prospect in 2009. He hit .352 in AA last year, and .364 in his short time in AAA.

Analysis: Heyward will fight Melky Cabrera for a spot in the outfield this Spring. If he doesn't make the opening day roster, it is likely we will see him one time or another this year.

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals

Info: Strasburg was drafted #1 in the 2009 draft.

Analysis: All scouts are astounded by Strasburgs velocity and power, but many wonder if he will be able to handle the big stage. It is likely that the Nationals will give him a chance to fail in the Minors before bringing him to the bigs, but it's likely that we will see him this season.

Jesus Montero, New York Yankees

Info: Baseball America ranked Montero the 38th best prospect in 2009. He hit .337 last year in the minors. Montero would have been the big piece of a possible trade for Roy Halladay, but the Yankees decided to hold onto him.

Analysis: Montero is going to hit in the Majors, nobody doubts that. But the Yankees are concerned about his fielding ability, and are working hard to improve his catching skills. Jorge Posada won't be around for much longer, so the Yankees might want to get Montero's feet wet. At this point, it would be as a DH.
