Kings Park/Commack vs. NY Islanders Alumni Fundraiser Set For Sunday Afternoon on Long Island
It may be the Stanley Cup playoffs right now, but on Sunday April 15, 2012, there will be a much more important hockey game going on in Long Island that doesn’t involve any team in the NHL playoffs. The 2012 Kings Park/Commack Alumni Hockey game will take place at 4:30PM in Kings Park, NY, benefitting the Frank J. Rizzo Memorial Scholarship Fund, as well as the Sarah Grace Foundation.
Alumni of the Kings Park/Commack Hockey team (Frank Rizzo’s former team before he passed away in a car accident) will face off against former Islanders, with the money going to both foundations. The Frank J. Rizzo Scholarship fund rewards seniors from Commack High School who are going on to attend college, while the Sarah Grace Foundation provided financial assistance to families with children who are suffering from cancer.
“It’s for the Sarah Grace Foundation, and it’s for kids with cancer. And it totally hit home and that’s why I said, ‘You know what? I am going to do something to make it worthwhile.’ And in turn, our friend, Frankie Rizzo, No. 68, passed away in a car accident. So we are going to play in memory of him, and the Sarah Grace Foundation,” Kevin Barratini, member of the Kings Park/Commack hockey team told Class Act Sports.
Last year, the Alumni Hockey Game raised over $6,000, and this year is hoping for an even better result.
“It’s all about charity, and I think we are going to raise some pretty good money,” Bobby Nystrom, former Islander and four-time Stanley Cup Champion, said.
Nystrom along with other former Islanders, including Clark Gillies, Steve Webb, Benoit Hogue and Doug Weight, will be playing in the game.
“We are more than able and willing to come out, and that’s a great thing,” former New York Islander Mike Hordy told Jared Ginsberg of Class Act Sports.
Tickets will be available at the arena Sunday, April 15 at Superior Ice Rink 270 Indian Head Road, Kings Park, NY
